My Devotional Notes: Job 24-28

The more I read the Bible the more I am amazed by and confident in God’s wonderful Word. God’s Word consistently declares His holiness, majesty, power, and love. It is true in every way. When I consider the variety of authors across the centuries, the different types of literature, the mixture of cultural and historical settings, and yet the message proclaims the same truth, it confirms once again the truthfulness and reliability of the Bible.

Job wants to know how to find wisdom. His friends have rambled from their own base of knowledge, but it is clear that they are not speaking truth and they do not possess a depth of wisdom. Then Job proclaims as from the lips of God, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28). I read that same truth again in Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, 2 Corinthians, and Revelation.

If I want to know wisdom, I must begin with fear of the Lord. My own intellect and reasoning, my own skills and abilities – not to mention trusting in these same things from other educated and capable people – will leave me far short of true wisdom. God has told me this several times. Maybe I should start listening to Him.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
