My Devotional Notes: Job 17-20

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

His reputation lay in ruins as people mocked him. Job’s spirit was broken; no one would vouch for him. So, Job wanted to have his account written down so that future generations would know the truth.  He had a confidence that, though his voice would be silenced, there was One who would speak for him.

“For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth” (Job 19:25).

This is the first time “redeemer” appears in the Bible (chronologically).  It was used in that day to describe a person rescuing land from being lost to debt, or a family member or friend purchasing someone from slavery or saving someone mired in a debt which cannot be repaid.

From the New Testament perspective, we know this Redeemer is Jesus. He came to save us from our sin, paying the penalty which we could never pay.

Though others may mock or condemn, Jesus purchased my freedom and in Him I am free.
