My Devotional Notes: January 5, 2012

Half-truths can sound so right.  They can be absolute, certain, and almost biblical.  In fact, half-truths are usually “proven” by a Bible verse or two. But these half-truths are complete lies and are often more dangerous and hurtful than what is clearly false.

Job struggled under the weight of the loss of his possessions, loved ones, and health (Job 6-9). His friends came to sit with him, but their best comfort was when they said nothing. When they spoke, it sounded like wisdom but fell far short of truth. They seemed to believe God demonstrates no love and only deals harshly with His children. They seem to believe that people can be good enough to earn God’s favor, but step out of line and the only thing received is His condemnation. It sounds almost right. But it is completely wrong.

Yes, God is holy and just. But He is also merciful and overflowing with grace and love. He demonstrated His love in that while we were still struggling with our sin, Jesus came and paid the price for my sin.

This never gives me the “right” to sin and do my own thing. But it allows me to bring my sin to the cross, to fall before Jesus, and in Him find forgiveness, hope, and healing.

Thank you, Jesus, for proving Your love for me. I desperately need You.
